"From that time on Jesus began to explain to his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things at the hands of the elders, chief priests and teachers of the law, and that he must be killed and on the third day be raised to life," Matthew 16:21.
He told them repeatedly that it was going to happen but they just didn't believe Him. It just couldn't be true! How could Jesus die? There is too much at stake! The disciples thought he was speaking in riddles or an allegory. They thought, "Jesus dying and raising from the dead after three days!" "Unbelievable!" There must be some other explaination.
This time [ Matt. 16], Peter had enough of this story. He took Jesus aside and rebuked him saying, "Never, Lord!" "This shall never happen to you!" However, one sad day, not too long after Peter rebuked the Lord, the skies turned dark in the middle of the day. The earth shook and the rocks split. The veil of the Temple was torn apart exposing the Holy of Holies. Just like He said, Jesus died on the cross. His disciples went into hiding discouraged and confused. They truly couldn't believe what had happened to their beloved Jesus.
Early Sunday morning, some women went to the gravesite for the purpose of anointing Jesus' body. When they got there, an angel told them, "Do not be afraid, for I know that you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified. He is not here; he has risen, just as he said. Come and see the place where he lay." [ Matt. 28:5-6] Forty days later, all of the disciples believed that Jesus had risen.
Hallelujah! It is true! Jesus, our Lord lives! As we speak, He is sitting on the right hand of the Father on high. We serve a living Savior. Every Sunday, when we observe the Lord's Supper, we celebrate His death and His resurrection. We BELIEVE and are SURE that Jesus rose from the dead! The resurrection story is not a myth – it is a FACT! The empty tomb screams with a loud voice saying, UP FROM THE GRAVE HE AROSE!
