HE LEADETH ME !

In the year 1862, J. H. Gilmore penned these beautiful words:

"He leadth me: O blessed tho't!

O words with heavenly comfort fraught!

Whate'er I do, where'er I be,

Still 'tis God's hand that leadeth me."

The chorus continues by saying,

"He leadeth me, He leadeth me,

By His own hand He leadeth me;

His faithful follower I would be,

For by His hand He leadeth me."

          It seems to me that too many Christians forget that we are a people blessed with Divine guidance. All too often we try and live our Christian lives all by ourselves. That is why we find ourselves in trouble so much of the time. Human wisdom alone is an insufficient guide. We who follow Jesus live under a better covenent than people who lived in the Old Testament. Yet, many of those worthies of old had a better understanding of God's leadership than many Christians living today. David wrote in Psalm 119:33-36,

"Teach me, O Lord, to follow

          your decrees;

then I will keep them to the end.

Give me understanding, and I

          will keep your law

and obey it with all my heart.

Direct me in the path of your commands,

for there I find delight.

Turn my heart toward your statues

and not toward selfish gain."

          It is only when we are led by the Spirit that we can accomplish all that God has in store for us. Romans 8:14 says, "those who are led by the Spirit of God are the sons of God". How are YOU doing? When you sing the song, "He Leadeth Me" is it the truth? If not, why not? Romans 8:9 tells us to be controlled "by the Spirit, if the Spirit of God lives in you". Next week, we will discuss ways the Spirit leads us. Until then, be Spirit led in all you do!
