PAY YOUR DEBTS !

We are quickly moving towards becoming a "cashless" society. ATM machines are found on every corner. Many pay their bills electronically. Of course, plastic (credit cards), has been around for a long time. It is nice to have all of these convenient ways to access cash but there is also a danger of moving deeper and deeper into debt.

I recently read that the incidents of people declaring bankruptcy has increased to an alarming rate. That is because so many have created a debt load they cannot bear. All of us should be cautious about going into debt. As a child of God, we have an obligation pay what we owe. Paul clearly said, "let no debt remain outstanding".

It always feels good to pay-off a debt, doesn't it? However, Paul mentioned one debt we have that we can never pay in full. That is the debt to love one another. We need to realize that love is something we "owe" each other. Brotherly love is not an option, it is an obigation – albeit a "sweet" one. Loving one another is a debt we must pay over and over again.

When we love one another, we are, in fact, fulfilling the law of God. Jesus made that clear in John 13:34-35. 1 John chapters 4 and 5 also teaches us that God expects us to love one another.

Since love is a continuing debt that needs to be paid over and over again, it might be good for us to take stock on how we are doing. If we find ourselves a little behind in our payments, perhaps we should add a little "interest" to our next installment. See to it that you "have sincere love for your brothers, love one another deeply, from the heart," 1 Peter 1:22.
