Submit To One Another !

"My Father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will."

Matthew 26:39

When Jesus was in the garden praying, He provided us with a wonderful example of submission. Our Lord did not want to suffer the indignities and the pain which were ahead of Him. He did not want to face the moment when God would "forsake" him. Knowing what was ahead, Jesus prayed for deliverance. "If possible, may this cup be taken from me!" Yet, even as He made this request, He gave in to the will of His Father. He said, "Not as I will, but as you will!".

What a marvelous attitude and a wonderful example to all of us. The longer I live, the more I realize how difficult it is to give in to God – and to others. You see, as a Christian, we not only give in to the will of God but to the needs of others. Paul wrote, "submit to one another out of reverence for Christ," [Eph 5:21]. If we cannot submit one to another, have we really submitted to the will of God?

It is easier to concentrate on seeking to do God's will than it is to swallow our pride and submit to the needs of others. Submission is not too difficult if we happen to agree with what is being asked of us. However, what happens if we don't like the proposal – or the situation? How do we handle submission then? If we refuse to seek our fellow Christian's highest good, are we really seeking the will of God?

I don't know about you, but I have a lot to learn about submission. We live in a society where everything is "me, me, me"! In seeking to do the will of God, we must learn to say "others, others, others".

"Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conciet, but in humility consider others better than yourselves." [Phil 2:3]. Such an attitude will help us to humbly submit our will to the needs of others. "Lord, help us learn the difference between being humble and being spineless. Help us learn to seek to do Your will – and Lord, help us submit to others."
