I Called But You Did Not Answer

"But as for you who forsake the Lord and forget my holy mountain, who spread a table for Fortune and fill bowls of mixed wine for Destiny, I will destine you for the sword, and you will all bend down for the slaughter; for I called but you did not answer, I spoke but you did not listen. You did evil in my sight and chose what displeases me."

Isaiah 65:11-14

How sad that Israel fell from faithfulness. It seems that they just could not stay on track. They would serve the Lord for awhile and then fall into apostasy. The prophets repeatedly called Israel to repentance but more times than not, their pleas fell upon deaf ears.

The warning of Isaiah 65 is applicable to people in every generation who call them-selves followers of the Lord. Notice the problems one faces when he choses not to listen to God:

They forgot His holy mountain. Zion, the home of the Temple, lay neglected. This was the direct result of forsaking the Lord. God expects us to listen when He calls us to worship. [Hebrews 10:25] Are you listening? Where will you be this Sunday?

They sought Fortune instead of the Lord. How many Christians are too caught up in "making a living" and/or following their "destiny". Many believe making money and providing for the luxuries of life is more important that serving God. When the Lord says, "do not love the world, or anything in the world," [1 John 2:15] are we listening?

They lived like the sinful people surrounding them. Our text says, "you did evil in my sight." That was a direct result of not listening! Their behavior was their own choice. When one decides to live a lifestyle that is in opposition to what they know is right, God cannot be blamed. Isaiah wrote, "you… chose what displeases me." Why didn't they listen? Because they chose not to.

The fruit of their decision caused God to destine them for the sword and for the slaughter. We cannot escape if we follow a pattern of disobedience. God help us to listen!
