What About Our Dark Side ?

Have you ever had the glorious feeling of being so close, so in love with the Lord that Peter's bold words became your own? "Even though all may fall away, yet I will not." We have all experienced emotions and thoughts like that and they are wonderful. The Apostle is not the only one whose passionate faith – "I'm ready to go both to prison and death for you". – bordered on bragging. I've been there; I know the invincibility he felt. Perhaps you are feeling that way now.

But, then, there is the dark side of Peter's denial. Not long after he had declared his loyalty-to-the-end speech, calamity struck and fissures of doubt suddenly penetrated him. "I'll never fall away" quickly crumbled into "I never knew the man." The man's impressive-sounding, rock-like faith was shattered by shameful denial.

I hope you never know that experience. But if you don't, you will be the exception rather than the rule. Virtually every Christian can remember a time in his or her spiritual pilgrimage when a falling-away has occurred. How can that be? How could a Christian, who is saved from sin, turn around and serve sin?

All too easily. You see, we all share the same dark side as Peter. It is called a sin nature, that natural tendency within even the holiest of saints to rebel against God. Join us in class every Sunday morning as we explore the back alleys of our dark side with the lamp of God's Word. Together let us confront the painful reality of our own sinfulness with the reassuring light of Christ's forgiveness and power to overcome whatever we may find. Light, remember, has one primary purpose: to dispel darkness.
