The only sure things that we have control over
are our own thoughts and actions. It's true that some people can be in control of others when they
destroy property or cause physical harm or death to others. However, no one can take away our control
of choosing how to understand and think about any given situation, or about other individuals.
When events occur like those of September 11, 2001, we can choose to understand them with a
spiritual way of thinking and become stronger in our faith. On the other hand, we could try to understand
them using human logic and perhaps be overcome by fear, and even become defeated in our outlook of
humanity and of the future. It is essential, then, to fill our minds with the Word of God. It is God who
will give us peace of mind and help us understand and deal with tragedies such as the terrorist acts of
September 11th.
"Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we
are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. For our light and momentary troubles
are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. So we fix our eyes not on what is seen,
but on what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal"
[2 Corinthians
4:16-18].
"Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and
petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all
understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus"
[Philippians
4:6-7].
