The Manuelito Story
Manualito Navajo Children's Home was not started as a childrens' home, but as a preaching
mission to the Navajo people. The mission work was over seen by a congregation in
Albuquerque, NM and later by one in Farmington, NM. Both of these congregations, being
approximately 140 miles away, felt they could not properly oversee this work so in 1959 the chruch
in Gallup, NM (a town in west central New Mexico, USA) was asked to take responsibility for this
work. |

The missionaries at Manuelito, a
small community 18 miles west of Gallup, were already caring for children who were left with them
by families who could not care for them. It also seemed the adult Navajos were not
accepting the gospel, so the decision was made to turn the major emphasis of the work to child
care. The reasons were two-fold. First, there was a great need to provide for the
many homeless children in the area. Second, through bringing these children up in
"the admonition of the Lord" there would be a greater opportunity to reach the adult
Navajo with the gospel. |
